Fish and tweets…

24 Aug

For those of you who’ve read my previous blogs, you’ll know that i’m conducting a social media experiment at work. I did a load of reserach before embarking on this. Some of this you’ll find in previous blogs on this site. Anyway, part of the experiment is for me to start blogging in the workplace as well as externally. And, I thought I’d share these internal blogs with you. Please note that we do already do a lot of social media stuff – this is all about taking it to the next stage.

This blog is all about responding to my previous blog Mother of all networks, launching talking to employees about what we could launch and when in terms of social media. Incidentally, I’m also doing a fun Friday blog which I won’t post on here – hence the references this time to a fish frenzy!

Wow, what a fish frenzy last Friday – well done for all the genius entries. So brilliant in fact, I’m going to give my top 3 a little prize. See later for details.

First of all though, I wanted to get back to you on your comments on my Mother of all networks blog and your questions on The Grill. Some fab input so thanks for that.

As I mentioned before, I’d like to find out from you what social media stuff you think we should introduce at work.

Here’s some of the stuff you asked about, along with an update on things coming in the pipeline…

Forums are back!
For you forum addicts, I’m pleased to say that forums are coming back within the next few weeks. We’ll be starting with a trial with some of the hot topics of the moment like broadband, on demand, social media etc. Once they’re up and running smoothly, we’ll expand them to cover more subjects using feedback from you. Keep your eyes peeled.

Our very own Twitter!
Yep, the guys in IT are working hard to finish this and we’ll soon be launching a trial of our very own Twitter-like application. We’ll be asking a few people to join the trial and once we’re happy, we’ll be launching this across the company later in the year. Oh, and you’ll notice that our twitter updates will start to appear on our blogs next week. And, for those of you wanting to follow the VMGrapevine twitter, do email me if you choose an ‘interesting’ name – I’ll need to accept you as a ‘follower’ as it’s a closed group and for Virgin Media folks only.

Office wiki
Quite a few of you spoke about a ‘worky wiki’ or even ‘Viki’! Well, the good news is that we’re going to start a trial of this in the next month or so. As we’re such a spread out company, with people travelling around a lot, we thought a good place to start would be to set up an office/site wiki. If you like, a bit of a combination of trip advisor and local tourist information sites. This will allow people to enter stuff about the office, local pubs, travel info, contact names etc. It will be information generated by you for you. I’ll keep you posted on when we’re starting this.

RSS / blog subscription
Good news for avid blog fans – we’ll soon have the ability to subscribe to blogs which means you’ll get alerted when your favourite bloggers have posted a new blog. It also means, if you’re that way inclined, that you can ignore the blogs you don’t fancy reading!
What about the peeps on the streets?

Many of you have asked what we’re doing for people with limited or no access to the intranet. Well, although it limits things, we’re looking hard at all the other media we could use such as mobile phones, PDAs, podcasting and so on. We’re a little way off introducing these but they’re in our plan and we’ve been talking to people about the best way of moving stuff forward. All ideas always welcome!

IM (instant messenger)
Many of you asked in my blog and The Grill whether we’d be introducing IM. Well, this one’s a bit trickier than the others so it’s going to take a while before we get an answer. Yes, we think it would be a great idea to introduce it – but, there are lots of IT implications and costs to bear in mind. Bear with us; we’re definitely looking at it.

Facebook, mySpace etc
A really hot topic that, again, we haven’t got all answers for – yet! Rest assured, we’re looking at all the pros and cons of opening these up, as well as security and IT issues. Again, this may take a while so bear with us. Where possible, we’re introducing alternatives for things that we know really work with these sites. For example, did you know that you can put your ‘status’ in our phonebook? A bit like the “Abi is…” in facebook?

And there’s more…
So, these are some of the things on the immediate horizon and a load more are being looked at. Don’t hesitate to let me know your thoughts or if you’ve got any other ideas.

As we introduce each new application, we’ll make sure we work with you to get things working the way you want them to. So, never hesitate to get in touch.
